The Pink Store, Palomas, Mexico, Mothers Day 2009. In the year since being here last, things havn't changed much, except there are way less street vendors. Here is a few minutes of video taken while we waited for our steaming hot orders of Enchiladas. You won't have to look long to realize that it was nice and cool inside. Our Mother's Day celebration was kind of quiet compared to the large family's celebration of the same event at the long table near us. They were a local hispanic family and most conversations were in spanglish.

SAHUARITA
We spent one night in the Pancho Villa State Park in Columbus New Mexico and met some great Casitans that live in Las Cruces New Mexico. We had time before dark to try for the geocache that is in the park. The cache is named Pancho. We searched until it was too dark, then came back the next morning after breakfast. We did not find it ! Must be a clever hide !
We were on the road towards Arizona before 0800 hours. We bought our highest priced fuel in Demming, just before jumping on the interstate. $2.29 per gallon. As we crossed into Arizona the fuel price was $2.09 .
It was a hot quiet day on the road. You know the kind that every day on the interstate is. By 1300 hours the outside temperature was 101* ! We forgot about economy, rolled up the windows, turned the air conditioning on high, kicked the Jeep up to seventy five and let the miles roll by.
We didn't want to go onto Tucson because of the time of the day, school was letting out, and traffic really backs up on the surface streets then. We skirted around town going out past one of the oldest Spanish Missions in The US, the San Xavier Mission and School.
Here is a photo of one of the passes that we went through.

The climbs up through those passes really cut into our gas mileage with the A/c on and running at seventy five. But not as bad as we have seen in West Texas fighting a head on wind.
We arrived at kinfolks house in Sahuarita, South West of Tucson, up high near Helmet Peak. When looking down into the valley towards Tucson in the evenings, there is always a breeze and the lights of the city below twinkle wonderfully.
Beautiful place, slower than slow internet speeds.
Here is a official description of the terrain we traveled through on this day:

So, here we are, driveway camping and visiting kinfolks, soaking up atmosphere, in Sahuarita, Arizona.
Maybe tomorrow will bring some exotic photos and places, but I really am enjoying visiting kin for now.

ALERT
Alert ! Alert ! Change of plans ! We topped out of the pass at Mountnair Nm, on US Hwy 60, and started down the other side, as we talked about how we were gona' celebrate Mother's Day. As we arrived in T or C to visit with Chuck and Geri, we kind of forgot about it. Then as we departed for Roper State Park, traveling down I-25 South towards Los Cruces, we picked up the conversation again.
After discussing several different things we decided on a late lunch at the Pink Store in Palomas Mexico just across the border from Columbus New Mexico.
As we bailed off of the interstate and began to cut across country on secondary roads, our Microsoft streets and Trips program squaked off route until Betty pulled the plug.
Silence, open highway, windows down, cool morning breeze, . . . . . we were off da' leash ! And a' runnin' down the road chasin' a dream. No rhyme or reason, no agenda, no maps, not even the Fm radio on.
We were just totaly escaping. Roper State Park will just have to wait till' the next time, we were going to run for the border !
Arriving at Columbus Nm, we checked into Pancho Villa State Park.

A quick shower and we were ready for old Mexico !

Lunch at the Pink Store was great. Here's Betty out front with the new metal art mariachi accordion player:

The old metal art Mariachi guitar player is now near the plaza behind the store near the statues of the Calvary Generals.

CANNONBALL
Spa's are a dangerous thing ! They will knock you out ! Or make ya' act as crazy as a July road lizzard ! As a part of the fun and friviolity, we have been trading imaginary stories on the Oliver Forums, www.oliverforums.com , in the camping thread about a dip in the Riverbend Hot Springs. Please understand that none of these things actually happened, but we are sure havin' fun stretchin the story further and further out of shape.

It all started off with a gag photo where I was making believe that I was doing a cannonball into the spa. Here is the photo:

Now, here is my last post to the gag forum thread: photo by earthdancer images
WooHoo ! When Chuck noticed that I was about to be lulled to sleep by the mineral waters, he challenged me to a cannon ball contest ! Now, that woke me up ! I thought I would have the advantage because of my size, but Chuck was ahead on style, until the folks over in the next spa complained about the noise and spray coming over the lattice works. We even got the number score cards that Betty and Geri were holding up wet.
I guess that we didn't hear the management of the spa pounding on the door, Chuck likes his Hip Hop tunez a bit loud, but the Police night sticks pounding on the door got our attention really quick.
After the ladies posted bond, we had a late supper at the niftyiest' ( is that a word any where besides the Ouachita mountains ? ) place.
Yeh, were' a' havin way too much fun in T or C, New Mexico !
Like this photo of a metal art bull, our wild story has been a lot of bull:

This photo was taken as we sadly parted company with Chuck and Geri at Truth or Consequences New Mexico, moving on west towards Roper State Park.

ROADBLOCKED
Three feet of snow have the road closed from Cumbres Pass to Trujillo Meadows Campground. As per our manager, we will be opening late this year. Said call him back in about a week. SOoooo. . . . We pulled out of Estancia Nm, and headed South to Truth or Consequences Nm. We are camped at the Hot Springs Spa by Chuck and Gehri ( Tumbleweed & Earthdancer ).
Lots of cool stuff here to see and do ! We were given a guided tour around the place by Gehri and Chuck. Here is a look:
Here is a short video of the spa's entrance and reception area:
The water in the tubs is so very clear that it is easy to misjudge the depth ! I thought the water was about four inches deep and it was nearly three feet ! I nearly fell head long into the hot tub which was 103* !

SANDSPURS
Burntout, I thought, just plain old burnt out. Standing at the back of the Jeep, Betty and I looked off down the steep enbankment into the ravine where the GPS said the geocache was and had second thoughts about how bad we wanted to find this cache.
Our tee shirts were stuck to our backs where we leaned back on the Jeep seats, though the air conditioning was on high. Our knees were sunburnt because we had worn shorts and sandals. Our sandals crackled as we walked, from the goat heads and sandspurs that were imbedded in the soles. Our noses were cherry red from sunshine and the hot wind that had buffeted us all day.
It was nice early in the morning, except for the wind. We noted as we located a cache out near the airport that the Grumman Ag Cat crop dusters were grounded from the gusting wind.
But now, we had had it. We just looked at each other and silently turned back to the Jeep.
As we turned onto the highway that runs through Floydada, we made a discovery. Running late for lunch, we discussed having lunch at a cafe on the way back to our campsite. It didn't happen. Every cafe in town is closed from 1 Pm to 5 Pm ( heat, siesta, or who knows why ), except for the Dairy Queen, we turned in there, or I should say we tried to turn in there. The parking lot was full and the to go window's line backed out onto the highway. Looking through the large plate glass windows at the full tables inside we noted that many were fanning themselved with table menus ! There were too many people and not enough air conditioning in there.
We went back to camp to a sandwich and a nap under the air conditioning.
We talked about it. It was time to seek a higher, cooler climate.
When the sun rose the next morning, we had breakfast and all the getting ready to move chores behind us. We were at the dump station peeling off latex gloves and washing up at the outside shower.
By 1400 hours we were driveway camped at kinfolks place in Estancia, Nm,

mild days and cool nights, elevation 6400 feet.
51* in the morning when we finaly woke up. We had the windows open all night and snuggled under the travasack sleep system.
Now, myself, being of the RAZORBACK persuasion, thought that this photo below was a proper use for a LONGHORN.

We refueled in Plainview Texas and these colorful longhorn cattle were painted into the most clever advertisements !
